NYC Cab Driver to reveal tales of the road in new off-Broadway play
John McDonagh’s Off the Meter, On the Record will have its world premiere at Irish Rep this fall. Irish Repertory Theatre has announced that it will present the world premiere of Off the Meter, On the Record, a new play by John McDonagh inspired by his 35 years behind the wheel of a New York City yellow taxi. Ciarán O’Reilly (Emperor Jones) will direct the fall production. Performances of Off the Meter, On the Record will begin October 6 ahead of an October 17 opening night.
In his newest work, McDonagh, who is also a playwright and the producer of the radio show Radio Free Eireann, offers an evocative social commentary about the life of a New York City cab driver—from the crazy demands of wealthy Upper East Side patrons and brushes with the rich and famous, to his interactions with the homeless community.
The production will feature scenic design by Charlie Corcoran (The Emperor Jones), lighting design by Michael O’Connor (The Pigeon in the Taj Mahal), and sound design by M. Florian Staab (Curvy Widow).
Tickets are on sale through Irish Rep’s box office by calling (212) 727-2737 or online at Irishrep.org.
